After nearly eight years of legal uncertainty, the court in Mytilini acquitted all 24 defendants on January 15, 2026, in the case against the rescue organization ERCI. Among them was Dutch humanitarian worker Pieter Wittenberg (78). According to the prosecutor, it could not be proven that there was a criminal organization, espionage, or any other form of illegal cooperation. The volunteers had been observing boats carrying refugees at sea in order to assist people in distress and transfer them to the authorities. The acquittal brings an end to a years-long legal case that became a symbol of the criminalization of humanitarian aid at Europe's external borders.

Guided by a strong moral compass, I believe storytelling comes with responsibility, and that powerful visuals should never come at the cost of truth.
